CMSA Appeals Mechanism

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  A copy of the Appeals Mechanism Policy is available at www.cmsa.co.za

Examination Structure

Part I: 1 written paper and a practical examination. Part II: 2 written papers; autopsy, 2 practicals, 2 OSPEs and oral.

Medals

The COULTER MEDAL was endowed in 1997 and is awarded to candidates who obtain excellent results in the Fellowship examination of the College of Pathologists of South Africa.


THE SIMON NAYLER MEDALwas endowed in 2017 and is awarded to candidates who obtain excellent results in the Anatomical Pathology Part I Fellowship examination of the College of Pathologists of South Africa.


 


 


THE DHIREN GOVENDER MEDALwas endowed in 2016 and is awarded to candidates who obtain excellent results in the Anatomical Pathology Part II Fellowship examination of the College of Pathologists of South Africa. 

Registrar Training : Autopsies

NB: Applicable to all candidates entering for the FC Path(SA) Anat Part II examinations from 2016.

It is proposed that the following be a guideline for trainees regarding the composition of the 50 autopsies. Trainees are encouraged not to limit their experience to 50 autopsies.

The minimum number of 50 autopsies should comprise at least 35 adult autopsies (> 16 years of age) and a maximum of 15 paediatric autopsies made up as follows: 10 cases (1 month to 16 years of age) and a maximum of 5 neonatal/fetal/perinatal autopsies.

All of these cases must be fully reported and authorised at the time of registration for the Part II examination.

Information on these cases must be recorded as required in the Portfolio and these may be requested by the CMSA for assessment at the time of registration for the Part II examination.

It is recommended that a minimum of 20 autopsies be completed at the time of registration of the Part I examination.

For candidates entering for the FC Path(SA) Anat Part II  examinations in 2015, the candidate’s Head of Department will approve the final autopsy cases (minimum of 50 autopsies).

Requirements

Part I: - 18 months in a numbered registrar training post at the time of applying for the examination
Part II: - 42 months in a numbered registrar training post at the time of the written examination. - 6 months in a cytology laboratory. - Minimum of 50 autopsies and must be able to cut and stain frozen sections.

PORTFOLIO
From the second semester 2014 the submission of your Portfolio at the time of making your application is compulsory for all candidates who entered into their Registrar post from 1 January 2011.
