CMSA Appeals Mechanism

PLEASE NOTE that candidates that wish to lodge an appeal against the outcome of his/her written examination results must do so in accordance with the provisions of the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) are not made available to candidates for review in accordance with the CMSA’s Appeals Mechanism Policy.  A copy of the Appeals Mechanism Policy is available at www.cmsa.co.za

Examination Structure


  • Primary: 2 MCQ papers, no oral examination.

  • Intermediate: 2 MCQ papers, no oral examination.

  • Final:

    Two 3-hour written papers comprising one MCQ paper and one short answer questions. One paper is made up of questions on general surgery and surgical pathology and the other one is made up of questions on anatomy and operative surgery.

Release of FCS(SA) Final results

Please note that the results for the FCS(SA) Final examination will be released on the published date as per candidates' letter of acceptance into the examination.  If they are available earlier, the CS will endeavour to inform candidates earlier of the provisional results.

Requirements


  • Primary: - Successful completion of the 3 day Basic Surgical Skills course or the Basic and Essential Surgical Skills Training (BESST) course prior to applying for the examination.



  • Intermediate: - passed the Primary

    completed not less than 12 months of approved training as a registered medical practitioner, in surgery. Of the 12 months training called for, not less than 6 months must be spent in general surgery, not less than 3 months must be spent in ICU, and not less than 3 months in trauma/emergency surgery.

    obtained the ATLS Certificate

  • Final: - 36 months in a numbered registrar training post. Electronic format of the Portfolio must be submitted together with a consolidation sheet. Proof of submission of research component (Effective from 15 June 2012 applications).  Candidates entering into their registrar training from 1 January 2018 must use the LogBook online portfolio.  This is a free service and the app is available in both Apple and Android format.  Please register at www.logbook.logbox.co.za
