Prof Mahlatse Kgokolo

President

Prof Mahlatse Kgokolo is the President of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa, Head of Department of Dermatology at the University of Pretoria and Steve Biko Academic Hospital complex.

As one of the leading dermatology scholars in the continent, she serves as a Senator, member of the Exams and Credentials committee (ECC) and Management Committee (ManCo) of the CMSA. In her capacity as the first custodian of Dermatology education in South Africa, Prof Kgokolo together with the council of the College of Dermatologists, is currently driving the development of Dermatology education in South Africa. She’s also an examiner, convenor, moderator and mentor.

Mahlatse contributes rich knowledge towards research as an Associate Editor of an International Journal of Dermatology, Dermatologic Therapy and nationally, as an Associate Editor of the Journal of the College of Medicine of South Africa, she also plays a national and international role in research by contributing as a peer reviewer for various Journals.

Prof Kgokolo is the only South African Dermatologist with the distinction of holding three Fellowships, Fellowship of the College of Dermatologists of South Africa, Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, and Fellowship of the Royal Society of London.

She is also a recipient of several research and service awards, including a Certificate of Honors awarded by The Scientific Research Society of Rutgers University, New Jersey Medical School, US and most recently The South African Health Excellence Award, Scientific Excellence Award, in recognition of her groundbreaking research which resulted in the identification of novel mutations in a cohort of South African XP patients.

She has a keen interest in Cancer research and together with her team, has done a lot of research on biomarkers and Immune checkpoints in Melanoma and non-Melanoma Skin cancers.

As a clinician with passion for teaching, Prof. Kgokolo also secured an important qualification in medical education, having completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science Education at Wits University and most recently, an EPAs Course through Utrecht University, Netherlands.

Prof Kgokolo is a member of the Postgraduate and Ethics committees of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria.

She’s also a member of the Pan African Cancer Institute (PACRI) Management Committee and PACRI Postgraduate, research and innovation committee (PPRIC).

Mahlatse is a founder member of the Skin Cancer Foundation and a member of the South African Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP) support group. She’s also a member of the executive committee of the European XP Society (a subgroup of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology).

Professor Frans Maruma is a distinguished dermatologist specializing in Aesthetic Medicine, Research, and Medical Education. As the Head of Dermatology at the University of the Free State, he also contributes to various advisory and institutional review boards. His research focuses on chronic pigmentary disorders in Fitzpatrick phototypes IV-VI, with findings shared at congresses worldwide and in scientific journals. 

An avid educator, Prof Maruma teaches at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, conducting significant research in cutaneous medicine. His expertise spans general, cosmetic, and aesthetic dermatology, dermatopathology, and rare skin conditions. Holding strategic roles such as Honorary Secretary for the College of Dermatologists of South Africa and Council member for the KwaZulu Natal College of Emergency Care, he’s also an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology and a scientific reviewer for prominent dermatology journals. 

Recognized for his contributions to aesthetic medicine, Prof Maruma is an authority on neurotoxins and hyaluronic acid treatments, frequently invited to train professionals in dermatology and aesthetic procedures. Outside his professional life, he enjoys family time, travel, and music.

Professor and Head of Department of Dermatology at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Pretoria, South Africa. Published 50 papers in Peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed journals. Presented several papers at local and International congresses. Reviewer for several peer reviewed journals including the International Journal of Dermatology.

Editorial Board member of the International Society of Dermatology. Immediate past President of the council of the college of Dermatologists of South Africa.
