Fellowship Ad Eundem
Criteria

Fellowship ad eundem is intended as a rare honour to medically or dentally qualified persons who may or may not be Fellows of The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), but who merit very special recognition by the CMSA for contributions different from those of an Honorary Fellow, but more than a Fellowship by peer review without examination.

Fellowship ad eundem may be conferred either in the CMSA or in one of the constituent Colleges. It is intended to recognise and acknowledge:

  1. Exceptional contributions to the CMSA and/or to one of the constituent
    Colleges.
  2. Exceptional attainments in the medical or dental professions especially in the
discipline in which the Fellowship ad eundem is to be awarded.
Fellowship ad eundem in the CMSA

The person nominating a candidate for Fellowship ad eundem of The Colleges of Medicine of South Africa shall prepare a proposal signed by at least three CMSA Senate members. The proposal shall be accompanied by:

  • A full curriculum vitae of the candidate.
  • A motivation in the form of a citation (800 words) for publication in the admission ceremony programme.
  • A short abstract of the citation (two minutes) which will be read by the President of the relevant constituent College.

As the nomination has to be screened by the Executive Committee before it is submitted for consideration by a full meeting of the Senate, it has to reach the CEO eight weeks prior to the date set for the Senate meeting.

Fellowship ad eundem in Constituent Colleges

The person nominating a candidate for Fellowship ad eundem in one of the constituent Colleges shall prepare a proposal signed by three Councillors of the relevant College.

The name of the nominee, with full curriculum vitae and ballot papers, shall be sent to the relevant constituent College Council in order to obtain a two-thirds majority support before the nomination can go forward.

If the required support from the constituent College Council is obtained, the person nominating the candidate shall submit this appropriately signed proposal for consideration by Senate, supported by the following:

  • A full curriculum vitae of the candidate.
  • A motivation in the form of a citation (800 words) for publication in the admission ceremony programme.
  • A short abstract of the citation (two minutes) which will be read by the President of the relevant constituent College.

As the nomination has to be screened by the Executive Committee before it is submitted for consideration by a full meeting of the Senate, it has to reach the CEO eight weeks prior to the date set for the Senate meeting.

In considering the fitness of nominees, the Executive Committee and Senate shall take into account:

  1. Standing in the CMSA or in equivalent Sister Colleges and Academies worldwide.
  2. Professional eminence.
  3. Distinction in literature or science.
  4. Without limit, such other matters as the Executive Committee and the Senate may consider appropriate.

Persons elected to Fellowship ad eundem of the CMSA shall be admitted at one of the biannual admission ceremonies of the CMSA, excepting in very extraordinary circumstances when a special ceremony may be arranged. Admission to Fellowship ad eundem may not be made in absentia or posthumously.

No person shall be admitted to more than one Fellowship ad eundem of the CMSA

Other than in exceptional circumstances, medical or dental practitioners who are involved in political office of any sort shall be considered Fellowship ad eundem only after having retired from such office.

Conditions of Fellowship ad eundem shall be the same as those which apply to Honorary Fellows (By-laws 41 and 42).
